Uttarakhand

If India is called the land of spiritualism, Uttarakhand is one big contributor towards it. Home to the holy Ganga and the 4 most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites, it is commonly referred to as 'dev bhoomi' (the land of gods). Sages and saints since time immemorial have housed under the shelter of the mountains here. The world flocks here to master asanas and to seek out big answers and the ashrams gladly offer them room to rest. The forests here are home to the largest concentration of tigers in India. Over the mountains and engulfing the plains, the forests covers about 25 percent of the state. The mighty Himalayan ranges provide great opportunity for high altitude trekking and mountaineering. Find glaciers from which rivers are born, find valleys overgrown with wild flowers, find lakes that reflect the sky and find temples as old as humanity itself. While you are at it, you'll also find a little bit of yourself, here in Uttarakhand.

Best Of Kumaon Uttarakhand

Apparently built on the lines of Cumbrian Lake District by the British, Nainital is one of Uttarakhand's most popular hill stations. A few kilometres from Nainital lie other towns that have lakes as their centres. Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal are charming little hill-towns built around tranquil lakes as well, and so this region is known as the Tal region. Blessed with gorgeous landscape including forests, rivers and hills outside the park, Corbett as a destination today is far bigger than the national park itself. un[travel] the Tal region of Kumaon and come in search for Shere Khan in the forests of Corbett National Park.

The Wild In Corbett

Blessed with gorgeous landscape including forests, rivers and hills outside the park, Corbett as a destination today is far bigger than the national park itself. Thanks to its proximity to Delhi & its natural beauty, tourists coming to Corbett are not limited to real wildlife lovers only, and there is a range of fun and adventure activities that can be enjoyed. Corbett is the only major tiger reserve to offer accommodation in forest rest houses inside the park. So what makes it so special? Well, there's the stunning landscape, nestled between the Himalayan foothills and the Shivaliks, that is somehow more 'wild' than in most other parks. This wildness seems to rub off on the inhabitants of this paradise as well, with Corbett tigers and other wildlife still largely retaining their natural shyness of humans.

A Weekend In Lansdowne And Corbett

Small getaways are what keeps us ticking through the rigours of a corporate life. What better way to spend it in the hills of Lansdowne and the jungles of Corbett. Much less travelled than its other hill station counterparts, Lansdowne is a much more serene version of everything you actually expect a former British summer town to be today. On the other hand, Corbett is a bit wilder.

Rapid Rishikesh

Beatle stop. Yoga Central. Haven of white water and holy water.  For almost forever, Rishikesh has been all things to every kind of untraveller. The world flocks here to master asanas and to seek out big answers. Raft along mighty rapids. Gather for treks in the Himalayas. And of course, top all this off with pancakes at one of the great eateries by the Lakshman Jhula.

From bungee to enlightenment, there’s something for everyone in this storied temple town by the sacred Ganga. And it certainly helps that it is set amidst epic forested hills.

Best time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March. The rain recedes by September and the mountains are a lovely shade of green. The flora comes alive and you can catch a glimpse of the snow-clad mountains as the haze disappears. The chilly winter arrives by late November and stays on until the end of February. It does get pretty cold and it snows at higher elevations. The skies remain clear and you can get a good view of the snow-clad peaks. Clear skies stay on through March till the haze sets in by mid-April.

You need to be lucky to get a view of the peaks during this time. But this is the best time to witness some wildlife action, especially the tiger. The rains arrive by mid-June and it’s officially monsoon time. Everywhere you see, you'll come across the brightest shade of green. Frequent landslides are the only dampener till the monsoons end.
