Gir

Simba might never have had to leave if he lived here, and neither would you. Get up close and personal with the king of the jungle here in his natural habitat at Gir National Park. The official last refuge of the endangered Asiatic Lion, Gir is the only place outside Africa that hosts free roaming lion prides. Initially hunting grounds for the erstwhile royals, the Nawab disallowed hunting of lions when their numbers fell to around 20 over half a century ago. The government's blanket ban on hunting later on led to a lion-breeding program that has since bred over 180 lions earning global acclaim. Gir today is one of the most protected areas in Asia with an incredibly diverse unique ecosystem.

Best time to visit December to March

The best time to visit Gir is between the months of December and March. The weather is much cooler here and the sightings are good.

During the later months of April and May, it could get rather warm for a comfortable safari. However, these are the best months to get some really good sightings of the wildlife in Gir at waterholes as well. From mid June to mid October, the park remains closed due to the monsoons.
