At the foothills of the Himalayas, Haridwar is everything its literary translation makes it out to be – 'gateway to the Gods.' Whether you’re here for the supernatural 'Kumbh Mela' gathering every dozen years or the general mystic aura, there's no place that has a religious buzz quite like Haridwar does. Generally crowded throughout the year, jostle your way past the odd wandering cow as you head over to Ram Ghat where orange-robbed sadhus and families bathe in the Ganges. Witness the 'aarti' at Har Ki Pauri late evening, for a glimpse into why a million devotees line these riverbanks day after day as small diyas drift downstream. Head over to the mountaintop white Mansa Devi temple for spectacular views of Haridwar, and spot the odd chillum-smoking Naga Baba sadhu with his renunciation of everything worldly including his clothes.
