Trip Summary

The village of Bir is geographically divided into two parts - Upper Bir and Lower Bir. These parts are inhabited by two completely diverse groups of people. The local Himachali agriculturists occupy Upper Bir and Lower Bir, also known as the Colony, is occupied by Tibetan refugees who first came here in 1966. Bir is an out and out beauty. Tea gardens, golden wheat fields, monasteries, temples, stupas and paragliding - all in a single village. The thicketed mountains in the periphery have narrow dirt roads that are great for some mountain biking and small peaceful hikes to the beat of the chirping birds. Talking about hikes, the tea plantation around Bir are also a great place for some romantic strolling. Owing to the presence of a large flat land and high mountains, Bir is considered to be one of the best places in the world for paragliding. Infact the 2015 Paragliding World Cup was held in Bir-Billing and it was a sight to behold. On a clear day, one can witness numerous coloured gliders criss-crossing the sky. The monasteries here receive fewer visitors as compared to their counterparts in more populous areas. As a result, spending time here is peaceful and relaxing. You can spend a large part of your day by hopping the monasteries in the area. One of them, the Palpung Sherabling monastery, can be reached after a good hike through the woods. The Deer Park Institute in Bir has been doing some excellent work in introducing studies of classical Indian wisdom traditions along the lines of the ancient Nalanda University of India. Watch the glorious sunset over the hills and ramble through the streets of the colony. The steaming momos and the thukpas in the small cafes complete your Tibetan experience, here in the small settlement of Bir.
