Jageshwar

Mysticism and tranquillity makes the pilgrimage town of Jageshwar a place of serenity, mediation and spiritual enlightenment. Pristine village background, deodar trees and the Jata Ganga add to the charm of the beautiful city.
The 9th-century Katarmal Sun Temple, built by Katarmalla, a Katyuri King, exhibits the architectural style and craftsmanship of the ancient artisans. Settle down for a pleasant picnic after the temple visit, by the riverside. Walk to the busy markets of Amora for special Kumaoni-style Jewels, Pashmina Shawls and traditional garments. Literally meaning one lakh caves, Lakhudiyar boasts of fascinating pre-historic rock and wall paintings within the caves. A hood like rocky shelter is the main attraction. Hike to the waterfall at Kasar and take a walk through the forest below. Spend some valuable time at the village in the forest to get a glimpse of life here.

Things to do

Almora-Jageshwar sightseeing - A convenient, quick tour of everything that is anything in Almora and around. This easy walk through the fairly busy cantonment town reveals interesting lanes with fascinating traditional little shops. Head over to the Simtola Eco Park, about 3 kilometres away for panoramic views of majestic mountains covered with pine and deodars, usually a perfect picnic and camping site.

Katarmal Sun Temple and Riverside picnic - Approximately 16 kilometres away from Almora town, the Katarmal Sun Temple dates back to the 9th century (and is one of just two Sun temples in all India). With a single main temple, the compound houses 45 smaller shrines all with fine intricate carving. Although somewhat in ruin, it's not called The Sun Temple for nothing - architecture here is unique in that the first rays of the sun hit the temple directly.

Kasar Waterfall trek -Hike to the waterfall at Kasar and a walk through the forest below. Spending time at the village in the forest gives you a glimpse into the average day of folks here. Our naturalist will help you identify different species of wildlife and birds and tell you about ancient customs and traditions of residents here. Further down the path you will encounter pristine waterfalls, hidden from the well-walked trail.
