Trip Summary

Often viewed as a day trip from Nainital, Bhimtal has now carved out its own space to become a unique destination in its own right. Until a couple of years ago, the main draw here at Bhimtal was its lake created by the earth-dam built in 1883. Regular boating and sightseeing apart, Bhimtal has now come to be associated with adventure activities like kayaking and paragliding. Now known for so much more, Bhimtal Lake also offers fantastic angling opportunities.
Picturesque views and renowned orchards make the little cantonment town of Ranikhet a popular tourist destination. Spectacular views of the Himalayas aside, Ranikhet is home to one of Asia's highest golf courses a mere 5 kilometres away. Make a short trip to one of the apple orchards or head over to Chaubatia Gardens for some fresh juice and stunning views. No stay at Ranikhet is complete without a visit to some, if not all, the numerous temples that dot the area. From the 800-year-old Katarmal (sun) Temple to the fascinating Jhula Devi Temple with its numerous bells, temple tourism here takes on a whole new meaning.
Once described by Gandhi as the Switzerland of India, Kausani is just as breathtakingly beautiful as its European counterpart. Spectacular views of the Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Panchachuli Peaks are visible if the weather is clear. The tea estates of Kausani that, from a distance, give the impression of well-mowed green lawns on mountain slopes are a pleasant sight. The Gandhi Ashram houses numerous books on Gandhi's life and also has a quaint museum.
