Meghalaya

''and then there were clouds all around.''It isn't a fluke when someone says that you can actually touch the clouds in Meghalaya. The gentle hills here are kissed by the sun and the rains alike, leaving the ultimate shade of green that adorns them. The capital city of Shillong hasn't given into the unchecked urbanization and still maintains its charm with the periodic cherry blossoms, placid lakes, waterfalls and beautiful parks. From the tallest plunge falls of Nohkalikai in Cherrapunjee to the living root bridges of Nongriat and the caves of Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya is blessed with beauty at every corner. No only beauty, Meghalaya leads the pack with places like Mawlynnong, which is termed Asia's cleanest village and with a matriarchal society where the woman marries the man and the property is vested in the woman.

Things to do

Eco Park and Seven Sister Waterfalls - This is unlike any eco park you have seen. Rife with waterfalls, this park has abundant greenery and a lovely view of the mountains and valley in the distance. Marvel at the Seven Sisters Waterfall which is in it's full glory during the monsoons.

Drive to Cherrapunjee - The drive from Guwahati to Cherrapunjee is a delight. The uphill ride is a treat to one's eyes with beautiful mist shrouded hills and waterfalls and the beautiful Umiam Lake also known locally as the Barapani Lake. The 150 kilometre ride takes around 4-5 hours.

Elephant Falls - Just 12 kilometres out of downtown Shillong is the majestic Elephant Falls. Named after a rock (destroyed in an earthquake) that resembled an elephant, the Elephant Falls is a 3-stepped waterfall. The first one is behind trees and is a broad fall, the second one is a small one, while the third one is the tallest and the biggest.

Elephant Safari - Time to see over and above the tall elephant grass of Kaziranga today. Head out for an elephant safari and roam the jungle like a boss. Because no one messes with the elephant. You can get very close to the rhinos. So close, you can almost touch them if you were riding a little lower. Unhindered view of the jungle is a big bonus on an elephant safari even though the duration is much shorter.
