Rann of Kutch

One of India's finest natural wonders, the region of Kutch is a colourful amalgamation of beautiful landscapes, interesting phenomenon and vibrant culture. This is a seasonal island that lies at the westernmost stretch of the subcontinent. Seawater floods the area in the monsoons followed by freshwater. Once the water recedes, all that is left is dry, hard barren land. Winter brings with it tourists flocking the region for a visit to this fascinating dried-up salt-flat. The 3-month-long 'Rann Utsav' fair under the full moon every year offers an excellent taste of local culture in the Great Rann at Dhordo with its sparkling white salt-bed. Kutch is also home to various species of wildlife (in spite of its dry arid conditions), and a safari at the Wild-Ass Sanctuary in Little Rann of Kutch is definitely recommended. Intricate embroidery and handicrafts are synonymous with the numerous tribal settlements dotted across the vast expanse of this landscape.

Best time to visit December to March

The best time to visit Gir is between the months of December and March. The weather is much cooler here and the sightings are good.

During the later months of April and May, it could get rather warm for a comfortable safari. However, these are the best months to get some really good sightings of the wildlife in Gir at waterholes as well. From mid June to mid October, the park remains closed due to the monsoons.
