The 'City of Lakes' presents a seriously contradictory picture of what arid Rajasthan is presumed to be. Udaipur, with its contiguous artificial lakes, small islands and numerous palaces is a rarity in everything it signifies. Lake Pichola, while serene on its own, is renowned for the impressive palaces that dot its banks as well. The stark white Lake Palace with beautiful courtyards and lawns is now a luxury hotel run by the Taj, and a stop here for tea would never be in vain. City Palace with beautiful terraces and courtyards is as renowned as the Udaivilas on the banks here as well.A boat-ride on Lake Pichola is the thing to do while here, but could get rather crowded in season. Home to some of the world's most luxurious heritage hotels, Udaipur gets you up close and personal with erstwhile royalty.
