Sri Lanka

The blue sea and sunny skies of erstwhile Ceylon is what drew the Europeans to this emerald island with its endless beaches. Now known as Sri Lanka, this is the place many choose to holiday, for its temples, tea plantations, heritage, waterfalls, festivals and of course its climate and cuisine! And the list is incomplete.
This lush green island gives plenty of choices at the beach, from just gazing at the sun from the historical Old Dutch Fort at Galle, to a relaxing Ayurvedic massage at Mirissa beach. Then there is scuba diving and snorkelling at the Unawatuna beach, or a relaxed sunbath at Induruwa beach and much more! What more to expect in a country surrounded by the sea but superb beaches, you just have to choose your mode - adventurous or relaxed.
Animal lovers will love the Yala National Park and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Sri Lanka is home to four religions and so has a number of festivals across the year. Kandy is a must visit, if you are visiting Sri Lanka in July-August.

Things to do

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens - A popular stop along the sightseeing trail for most tourists, it is especially infamous for the spice garden within it. It was laid in 1374 as a pleasure garden of the Kings of Gampola and Kandy. There are more than 5,000 species of trees, plants and creepers, some of which are pretty rare and endemic as well.

Tour of Polonnaruwa - A UNESCO world heritage site, this was the land's capital from around 993 AD to 1250 AD. The whole flourished in the 'Golden Reign' of its greatest king, Parakramabahu I. Agriculture developed to its highest peak and Sri Lanka became the 'Granary of the East'. The ruins here are beautiful and the most fascinating part about it is the toque macaques.

Temple of the Tooth - The sacred tooth relic, housed in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is an object of veneration to the Buddhists and the most important sacred relic in the country. The temple is one of the most sacred places in the world for Buddhists.

Best time to visit November to March

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with two monsoon seasons, from May to August, and from October to January. However, it is also the best time to enjoy the greener pastures of the Island. The apt months for spotting wildlife is from February to June, when water levels are lower and animals come out to fetch water. The dry season in this region runs from December to March.

The period from December to April is considered the peak season for overall weather and good time of year to travel and to enjoy the beaches. January to March is a beautiful time to be in the central hills or southwest Sri Lanka, as days are sunny and dry. The sea is relatively calm during this period, and the chance of spotting whales and large pods of dolphins is very high, often only a few miles off the coast.

The Christmas and New Year period is the festivity time in Sri Lanka. Galle Literary Festival takes place annually in late January or early February.
